Best Beard Butter – What Is It And The Top 3

Beard what? That’s right you did not read the title wrong. In this review we’re going to talk a little bit more about what beard butter actually is, how to use it and recommend the best beard butter out there today.

This could be the next big beard care product on the market. It is relatively new and is creating quite a bit of Buzz.

We normally talk about removing your facial hair here at Best Men’s Shaver but sometimes you just want to grow a beard.

Maybe winter is coming up or you’re doing it for a charity or you’re participating in No Shave November. Whatever the reason, this butter will help maintain your beard to keep it healthy for as long as you need it.

What Is Beard Butter?

It is very similar to beard oil in that its sole purpose is to help keep your beard and skin healthy. The butter conditions your beard to keep it soft and also helps prevent beard itch.

It is basically a balm but as the name implies it is contains mostly butters but is also full of nourishing waxes and essential oils. Beard Butters will give your beard a different finish than oils and may not feel as greasy as well.

Ingredients

As we just mentioned the this butter can have one or multiple types of Butters along with waxes and oils to help moisturize your beard and skin. All of them will have different properties but with the same goal in mind.

Source

Shea butter is one of the most common butters that you will find in a beard butter. the butter is extracted from the seeds of a shea tree.

Shea butter is used a lot in cosmetics mainly as a moisturizer. You’ll find it in items like creams, hair conditioners and lip gloss.

Humans have been harvesting shea butter for its healing properties and skincare for thousands of years. I can even help protect your skin from the Sun.

Cocoa butter – this is probably the second most common butter you will find in beard balms. It is high in oleic and stearic acid which are great for moisturizing and softening. Which is why you will find this ingredient in many skin and hair care products.

Just like the shea tree extraction, cocoa beans are fermented and roasted to get the fruit out of their hulls from which the butter can be extracted.

Cocoa butter is high in natural antioxidants and has a long shelf life making it a very popular ingredient.

Beeswax – beeswax has many uses including

  • candles
  • use in cosmetics
  • cooking
  • painting
  • preservation
  • etc.

However, when it comes to this butter, it is added for its hold ability and is what gives your beard a little shine to it. It has been found to be a better ingredient than other questionable ingredients like petroleum jelly.

The ratio of wax to butters is higher in balms vs. these butters which is why you may get a little more hold and shine with traditional beard balm.

Other Ingredients

Jojoba oil – jojoba oil is extracted from the seeds of the plant as well. It was initially used to treat open wounds or sores however, as more demand for natural ingredients came around it was used in cosmetics.

You can even use the pure oil itself straight on your skin or hair.

The fatty acids it contains are great for conditioning your hair.

Argan oil – argan oil is added for its moisturizing properties as well. It is high in oleic and linoleic acids and also contains vitamin E.

While it is used similarly to olive oil in some countries, it is mainly used to treat skin and hair in the cosmetic industry.

Castor oil – while castor oil has many uses in food and medicines, it is most likely used in butters for its coating ability.

It is not a drying oil so it will help keep your beard hair moisturized even after being exposed to air for a while.

Castor oil is also great for lubrication so it should help you spread the butter over your beard easier.

Vitamin E –  vitamin E is found in natural oils such as wheat germ, sunflower and safflower.  Vitamin E is primarily an antioxidant which helps fight off unwanted free radicals that damage tissues in your body.

This makes it great for your hair and your skin by helping prevent and repair damaged cells.

Essential oils –  this is where you butter will get its scent from. If it were not for these oils, the manufacturer would have to use chemical infused fake scents.

Essential oils are extracts from several different plants that contain the essence of the plant.

Who Needs It?

So, do you really need a butter? No, probably not but if you are looking to keep your beard hair healthy and the skin underneath if you have a long beard than a butter might be a good choice.

Butters, balms and oils will all help moisturize and protect your beard hair but they will also all give you slightly different affects and feels.

Oils will add a little more shine to your beard hair than the other two but will not give you any hold.

If you are looking for a styling element then, a butter or a balm would be better. The butters will give some hold with balms giving the most hold.

A butter could also just be a great way to freshen up your scent for your lady!

If you suffer from any of the common beard conditions such as a wiry beard or beard itch, regular use of a butter, oil or balm will help tame this and keep your beard healthy.

Basically, if you are going to keep any kind of length on your beard besides stubble it is probably worth it to maintain it properly.

How To Use It

Here is a quick video if you don’t feel like reading:

  1. Applying a butter is relatively simple. simply scoop a small amount out, about the size of your fingernail.
  2. Then begin rubbing your hands together with the butter. The friction will cause the butter to heat up and turn into an oil-like state.
  3. Then simply massage the butter in to your beard. Be sure to get deep down to the roots of your hair and skin as well.
  4. If you need more at this point go ahead and take out another scoop.
  5. After you have finished massaging the butter into your beard you can spread it even further with a nice brush or comb if you like.

Feel free to apply butter every day, some guys even do it twice a day. You will get a feel for when your hair is feeling dry and needs some conditioner.

Some guys feel it is best to apply after a hot shower when your beard is still wet or damp.

When you are done be sure to wash your hands before you accidentally touch your clothes or something like that. The oil is hard to get out.

Recommendations

There are several companies out there making butters these day however, these three just happen to be some of the best selling ones on the market.

Honest Amish Beard Balm Leave-in Conditioner

Yes it says balm on the canister but there is a fine line between the two.

With a 4.4-star rating and over 5,000 reviews you will be hard pressed to find another product with so many happy customers.

It comes in a 2 oz. jar and is made with all natural and organic ingredients so you don’t have to worry about putting any harsh chemicals on your beard.

They stand behind their product as well with a 100 % money back guarantee!

They use 15 different wholesome ingredients that your beard will love you for. There are some complaints about the scent but then there are others who love it.

It should also dissipate with a half hour or so, so even if you don’t like the scent it won’t last long. The scent is a personal preference and you can almost always find complaints about them.

This could be a great butter to start with as many guys love how soft their beard feels after regularly using this product.

Wild Willie’s

Wild Willie’s is definitely one of the most popular on Amazon with over 1,200 reviews and a 4.4-star rating.

It comes in a rather large, 2 oz. jar so it should last a good while as well.

The butter comes with many of the high quality ingredients we listed above and they are also almost all organic. It does contain beeswax so it will give you beard a little hold as well.

They even claim this will promote beard growth! However, even if it doesn’t they offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

If you have a sensitive nose you may feel like this has a strong scent but many guys say it dissipates quickly. It shouldn’t feel too thick when applied and also gives a decent hold according to guys with large beards.

This butter will absorb and set into your beard fast than a traditional beard oil. Which is great if you are in a hurry to get out the door.

Most of the complaints are simply from guys who didn’t like this butter compared to other balms they have tried before but there were not many.

Be careful not to over apply, if you use too much of this stuff it could make your beard feel weird.

Overall, this will be a great buy to tame your beard and keep it looking healthy.

Maestro’s Classic Mark of a Man

Another top candidate that is worth looking at is Maestro’s ‘Mark of a Man Blend’.

It is a little more expensive but comes in a 6 oz. jar so it is really about half as much per ounce as the Wild Willie’s. it is not quite as popular with only 35 reviews but still a 4.3 star rating nonetheless.

This a water based cream rather than an oil based butter like most out there. It still has shea butter but no wax so you won’t really get any hold from this product.

It comes with a light grapefruit scent which the guys seem to really enjoy.

This may be easier to apply than your beard oils and has helped beards lay down better according to some men. Guys seem to really like how soft this makes their beard feel.

There aren’t many complaints at all and nothing that stands out. However, as this product grows I’m sure there will be more as you cannot please everyone.

However, so far it seems to please its customers. It doesn’t have a guarantee like Wild Willies but if you are looking for something that is non-greasy this could be the one for you.

Conclusion

Hopefully by now you have a better understanding of what you are looking for in a butter.

Which will be best for you will be determined by your wants and needs.

Like we mentioned earlier, there are several butters out there, however, one of these could be a great place to start.
