Best Shaving Kit for Father’s Day

If you are interested in keeping this year’s shopping simple or want to subtly suggest that Dad needs an upgrade in the grooming department, a shaving kit might be the perfect gift.

Shaving kits come in many varieties, so be sure to read the product description and ensure that it comes with everything you are looking for.  All kits will come with either shaving cream or shaving soap, but beyond that most kits vary with with everything from pre-shave oils to after shave lotion or balm. Other kits focus on the equipment side with high quality, handcrafted brushes and razor handles.

The three kits below come highly recommended by us and users alike.  We have included a little variety in the kit selection to help make things a bit easier for you.

The Art of Shaving Kit

The Art of Shaving Kit is a perfect gift for Dad.  The Art of Shaving company is passionately devoted towards helping men experience the perfect shave.

They have created an innovative path to optimal shaving performance with their 4 Elements of The Perfect Shave – Prepare, Lather Up! Shave and Moisturize. The Art of Shaving believes that this regimen helps prevent common shaving discomforts such as razor burn, ingrown hairs and nicks and cuts.

The kit includes pre-shave oil, shaving cream, a badger hair brush, and after-shave balm.  It also comes in 4 primary scents (Unscented, Lavender, Sandalwood, and Lemon- we particularly like Sandalwood).

The Art of Shaving is ideal for people with sensitive skin as it was designed to prevent skin irritations.  In our experience, it leaves the skin feeling smooth throughout the day.

The only drawback to the kit is that it does not come with a razor, so we recommend using what works best for you.  We assume this isn’t Dad’s first time shaving, so he will already have a razor he likes. This kit simply upgrades the rest of the shave for everyone’s benefit.

A cheaper alternative for a Dad who might be finicky with his shaving routine is the Art of Shaving Starter / Travel Kit.  This package is ideal for the guy who might want to test out the product before jumping in.  It is important to note that this is a smaller kit, so the portions will not last long and the brush is not as high quality as the full kit, but we like it for those who may not have used a kit before.

Bevel Shave System

The Bevel shaving kit is yet another prominent shaving kit for gentlemen, and is intended to prevent razor bumps and irritation.

If you want your guy to have a cleaner smoother shave, consider this shaving kit which is designed for a premium shaving experience.

Most other shaving kits are not made to prevent skin irritation, but this kit is specifically designed for that purpose- we particularly like the post shave Restoring Balm.

Related: Best Shaving Cream

As a 5 part system, this shaving kit retails with every single thing you might need to attain a great shave, and it’s been clinically verified for its capability to alleviate razor irritation and bumps.

The shaving system also comes with a first-rate safety razor which does not cut the stubble under your skin and is great getting rid of ingrown hairs. It also comes with shaving cream and a shaving brush.  People love the clean shave and lack of bumps after just starting this system. It is designed specifically to prevent skin irritation and users agree. The Bevel system is a little on the pricey side and some users wish it came in bigger sizes, but the general consensus is that it’s worth the price.

Naked Armor Razor Set

Naked Armor is a great small shaving company and its Razor Set is another great gift idea for Dad.  Naked Armor crafts its products with the highest degree of precision and quality, utilizing Sandalwood for its shaver and brush handles as well as by handcrafting its organic shaving soap. Additionally, Naked Armor strongly supports non-badger brushes and is fully committed to protecting these creatures by donating a portion of your purchase to the Wildlife Conservation Network.

Given the quality of their products and animal friendly culture, this is a prefect gift for Dad.

The kits includes the following items:

  • RAZOR – The Brazilian Sandalwood Razor
  • SOAP – Handmade organic soap for the face with great lather and smell.
  • BRUSH – Badger friendly wood carved handle brush for mixing your soap.
  • BOX – Beautiful box for gifting

It is important to note that the kit comes with a modern five-blade Gillette razor or a more traditional safety razor, depending on preferences.  Both of these razors are perfectly balanced, allowing for the razor to sit nicely in the fingers compared to cheaper, store bought plastic handles.  This set is about the quality of the equipment in the brush and razor handle. The soap is unique but with less of a focus than the craftsmanship.

Though shave creams are widely used today, this is also an ideal kit for someone who already uses shaving soap or is looking to give it a try.  A quality shave soap allows you to build a lather with the same consistency as that of shave cream. Naked Armor soap is handmade and 100% natural.  We have also provided recommendations to a few of our favorite shaving soaps below.

Best Electric Razors for Father’s Day

Electric razors are a classic Father’s Day gift, so when shopping for a great electric razor, here are some features to look for.

Foil vs. Rotary. First and foremost does Dad have a preference for a foil or rotary shaver? Usually the rotary electric shavers will perform around the contours of the face better than the foil shavers. It also said the foil shavers will get a little closer of a cut.  The easiest way to know his preference is to check what Dad already has and either replace or upgrade his current electric razor.

There is some give and take here but again, the preference will depend on the person. If Dad has sharp jaw lines or a prominent chin, you should opt for a rotary.  If he wants the closest shave possible you should get a foil.

Either way both types will come with different types of lifting technologies that help raise your hair to give you the closest shave possible.

Power. This is one of the most important features of an electric razor. Dad doesn’t want to spend all day shaving especially if it takes longer to shave with an electric shaver than a regular or safety razor. Look for razors with at least 10,000 cycles per minute. As you look at more expensive shavers this number will increase.

Maintenance. This is another important factor when determining the electric razor that’s the right fit. Try to look at how often you might need to replace the head on your shaver. Some might go two years and others may only go one year.  Of course this will vary from person to person as well depending on the thickness of your beard and the frequency of use.

Most companies recommend to replace the heads on your shavers every 12 months or so but you may be able to stretch this out to 18 months depending on usage.

Best Electric Razors Over $100

Braun Series 7 790cc

In our opinion, the Braun Series 7 electric razor is hands down the best on the market and in fact the electric razor I use on a daily basis.

This shaver boasts a 4.3/5-star rating on Amazon with over 10,000 reviews, which is hard to beat.

The first thing you will notice is that the shaver is built for performing, while only slightly more expensive than its Series 5 and 3 peers.

Features like the intelligent sonic technology which vibrates that razor at over 10,000 times per minute helps to lift hairs up into the foil cutting even the most thick, stubborn stubble. This helps increase the efficiency at which the shaver cuts a beard.

It also has five different speed settings to choose from when shaving your beard, making it one of the best electric shavers if you have sensitive skin.

The activelift and optifoil are two more features designed to help the head on this shaver get as close as possible to your skin by pulling the hairs up from your skin.  It is also designed to swivel and flex so you can easily get all the areas around your chin and jawline.

Lastly, the Braun Series 7 comes with a clean and charge station which makes maintenance and upkeep much easier.

Philips Norelco 9300

The Philips Norelco 9300 is a classically designed personal shaver that sports some very useful features. It is reasonably priced while still providing the quality you would expect from the Philips Norelco brand. It comes with a powerful battery that charges as quick as five minutes. That isn’t all that Dad is going to love.

Some of the other great features include:

Contour Detect Technology – The razor detects the angles and curves of a person’s skin so that it can adjust to it. This feature is important because it provides a closer shave without cutting the skin or requiring the shaver to turn their head.

Precision Blades – These v-shaped blades are designed to cut the hair on the first pass. This reduces the number of passes over the skin which is the primary cause of irritation and razor burn.

Comfort Settings – The razor provides a series of speeds to best suit the user. This allows for better control of the pressure at which one presses the shaver into their skin, thus increasing the pleasure of the shave.

Smart Clean – With the ability to place the razor in its port to clean and charge, the razor is always ready to go.

Aqua Tech – Aqua tech really is just a more complex way of saying waterproof. It means the razor can be used either wet or dry and with or without shaving gel. We recommend using an electric razor with shaving soap or cream as one of the most comfortable ways to shave.  Dad would love you even more for providing this level of comfort!

Best Electric Razors Under $100

Panasonic ES-LT41-K Arc3 Wet Dry Electric Razor

This is, in our opinion, one of the best electric razors especially if you are looking for a foil head. Not only does it come with your standard 2 year limited warranty, it also comes with a 30 day money back guarantee. This just goes to show you Panasonic stands behind their product which should make you feel comfortable with your purchase.

It comes with all your basic standard features but boast a powerful motor with over 13,000 cycles per minute.

The main feature we like is that each of the 3 nanotech blades have their own suspension. This allows the blades to stay close to your skin even around the contours of your neck, chin and jawline. Panasonic really stepped up their game with this feature.

It also has a pretty nice LED display for being just under $100.

There are over 800 happy customers that give this shaver an average rating of 4.2/5 stars.

Philips Norelco Electric Shaver 5500

A close runner up is the Philips Norelco Electric Shaver 5500.  Even though this rotary shaver doesn’t quite pack the same punch as its higher-end counterparts, it is a bargain at the sub-$100 price level.

If Dad prefers rotary over foil shavers, this electric shaver is a great fit.

The main feature we love is its turbo mode! The turbo mode gives you a 10% boost in power so Dad can finish his shave even faster. This is also a helpful feature for those with heavy and thick facial hair.

It is also easy to clean and comes with a precision trimmer. Two little added bonuses for the price point.

In trying to stay below $100, one feature that the 5500 does not include is the SmartClean Cleaning System which cleans, lubricates and charges the razor.  For a small amount more, and a price tag just above $100 you can shift to the 5700 model which includes this feature. Best Shaving Creams / Soaps For Father’s Day

What Is Shaving Soap VS Cream And How Is It Different?

Shaving soap actually has quite a bit of history. Soon after the safety razor was invented, shaving soaps came along in the early 19th century. Shaving soap is designed for use in a shaving mug or scuttle. This is a container that helps lather the soap with a shaving brush.

Shaving soap doesn’t look any different from regular soap typically sold in a bar or puck form. However, the main difference between shaving soap and regular bath soap is that shaving soap uses two ingredients that simultaneously allow the soap to be hard in the puck form as well as easy to lather on a brush.

Why Should You Use A Shaving Soap VS Cream?

The number one advantage of using a shaving soap whether you are using an electric shaver or a DE safety razor, is the additional moisture it provides during the shave. However, Dad can still benefit from switching to shaving soap even if he uses a cartridge razor such as the Mach III or Fusion.  Shaving soap is not only good for your skin but also helps soften your whiskers allowing for a smoother shave. This is also why using a shaving soap is better for those of you with sensitive skin.

When the natural oils are removed by the soap on your face this allows water to penetrate the whiskers. The hairs are easier to cut when they are softer and the aerosol shaving creams do not provide this benefit.

Another small benefit if you travel a lot is that shaving soap is approved on airplanes. Unlike their aerosol can counterparts, your shaving soap puck cannot explode on the plane!

Purchasing a shaving soap with a mug and brush can have a higher upfront cost, however, after you have your equipment the long-term cost of using a soap vs. an aerosol cream is often cheaper. So, if you are looking to shave a few bucks and Dad has a few extra minutes in the morning go ahead get him some shaving soap to try out.

Cons of Using a Shaving Soap

The biggest and most obvious con of using shaving soap is time. When you start using a soap vs. a cream you will add a few more minutes to your shaving routine. This is because instead of just pushing a button, you have to lather up the soap with your brush and apply it to your face.

Another potential disadvantage is you have to use more equipment which will take up more space in your bathroom. If you are in a small apartment or share a bathroom with other people you may want to consider this.

However, you don’t necessarily need to purchase a ‘shaving mug’- you could simply use a bowl or extra coffee cup you have lying around.

Proraso Shaving Soap in a Bowl

Proraso is probably the best deal on shaving soaps. For around $10, Proraso comes in its own 5.3oz bowl so you don’t have to worry about that.

You can get it started in the bowl and then finish creating your lather right on your face. This soap will continue to build into an even richer lather which will help exfoliate your skin as well.  Proraso shaving soap has eucalyptus oil and menthol to help tone your skin and leave a refreshing sensation (we also really like the scent).

It has a 4.6 rating with over 2,500 reviews on Amazon!

Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream

OK so this is technically not a hard soap but still works in the same way. This cream comes in its own bowl and is loved by customers with a 4.6 rating with over 4,300 reviews!

This one also comes in a 5.3 oz container but has a unique scent of sandalwood with some other floral notes.

You can use your shaving brush to dip the cream straight on your face to create a rich lather or you can put a little cream on your brush and lather up a nice rich cream in your mug or bowl.  You really don’t need a ton of this product for one shave. You will love this smell as well!
