Best Straight Razor Blades – Here Are The Top 6

From sharp to smooth the right blade for your straight razor can make all the difference. Keep reading this review to learn more about the best straight razor blades.

If you are thinking about getting into wet shaving with a new shavette you should also do some research on blades as well as they can have a big impact in the shave.

Since every man’s beard and skin types are different, it is hard to make a general recommendation for the masses, we can at least point you in the right direction.

Who Should Consider Using A Shavette?

Anyone who is looking for a better, cheaper shave could benefit for from a straight razor style shavette.

If you are currently using an electric shaver or a multi-blade cartridge razor, it may take a little time to adjust to wet shaving but many guys have made the switch and never looked back.

They don’t offer the convenience of an electric shaver or a multi-blade cartridge razor, but you will be able to get a close shave without irritation that is much cheaper in the long run.

You will need to give yourself a few extra minutes in the morning, especially if you like to get a close shave as you may need to perform multiple passes.

However, many guys come to enjoy the shaving process as its own ritual. They like to try different razors and blades, almost like beer or wine aficionado’s.

Plus, as you begin to learn what you like there are several hand-crafted shaving soaps or creams to try out with your straight razor.

Disposable Straight Razor Vs Straight Razor

The great thing about these shavettes that use disposable blades is there is virtually no maintenance like there is when you have a fixed blade straight razor.

Now, of course with a fixed blade, you won’t have to buy refills, but the blades are usually under $.10 apiece.

But with the disposable blades you won’t have to buy whetstones and strops to constantly tend to your blade. If it starts to dull, just throw it out and put a new one in.

Although, a lot of guys take pride in caring for their straight razor blade so you could find it enjoyable.

However, a shavette could be a great way to get your feet wet and test the waters.

Types of Straight Razor Blades

Besides some manufacturers like Feather that make their own style of blade, most straight razors take half of any regular double edge razor blade.

If you already have a favorite, you can simply snap them in half pretty easily to fit your straight razor.

However, some brands sell them halved already so you don’t have to worry about cutting your fingers during this process.

If you are not sure which ones you might like you can always find variety packs that have several different brands to try.

Just watch how easy it is:

When Should You Change The Disposable Best Sraight Razor Blades In Your Shavette?

Again, because every guy’s beard and skin are different it is hard to give a general recommendation.

Some guys can get 10+ shaves with a razor blade and others get 1.

If you have a thicker or coarser beard, you may dull the blade faster. As it dulls it could pull and tug on your hair which could lead to irritation. You definitely want to change if you feel this.

Otherwise, you can simply test your blade of choice to see how far you can take it.  Some blades may last longer than others and you will have to see how your skin tolerates them.

Where Should You Buy?

We tend to recommend Amazon when shopping online they have a huge selection you can quickly and easily compare straight razor blades.

You can also get free shipping as long as you spend $25 which isn’t that hard to do.

The main thing we like is all of the customer reviews. You get to see many different comparisons to see how they might relate to your beard.

Just be sure to look for ‘verified purchase’ reviews.

Derby Professional Single Edge Razor Blades, 100 Count

The Derby Professional single edge razors are by far some of the disposable best blades you can buy. With a 4.4- star rating and almost 300 reviews, these come highly rated.

Besides working well for your shave, these are also some of the most economical blades being less than $.06 per blade at the time of this writing.

These will work with all of the popular shavettes from well-known brands like Parker and Dovo.

The great thing about this pack is you don’t have to worry about splitting the blade yourself and potentially slicing a finger.

Guys really seem to love this point and say it really is so much easier than snapping your own blade in two.

Many reviewers mention they get about 4 shaves per blade but again, this will vary from person to person depending on beard thickness.

Unlike shaving with a multi-blade cartridge razor, you will need to take the time to prepare your face for the shave with a hot shower and possibly even a pre-shave oil.

If you do this then you should be well on your way to a smooth and comfortable shave.

Out of the few complaints, the main one is that these are not the sharpest blade out there.

Derby blades are known for their smoothness and not their sharpness. So, if you have a super thick beard you may want to try a different brand.

However, if you have sensitive skin these could be great for you.

Shark Super Stainless Straight Edge Barber Razor Blades for Professional Barber Razors

These Shark Super Stainless have a similar rating as the Derby blades and over 500 reviews and seem to be more popular with guys who prefer a sharper blade.

Despite being a little sharper this blade will also deliver a smooth shave.

These blades are also durable and many guys mention they can get several shaves before noticing a decrease in sharpness.

This could be great if you have coarse hair, some guys will dull a blade after one use so it’s important they get some that can withstand the abuse.

There are reviews from beginners as well as veterans who just love the shave they get from this blade. They are using all kind of shavettes as well.

Of course, the main complaint is that they are dull, but this is relative to your beard and skin. So, some guys may need the sharpest blade like a Feather or Astra.

Overall this is another solid blade choice for your straight razor that will get the job done, they are cheap and the 100 packs will last you a long time without taking up much space in your bathroom.

BLUEBIRD Single Edge Razor Blades for Barbers Hi-Stainless

A less popular single edge blade would be the BlueBird razor blade. It is slightly more expensive than the other so far but still has a decent rating.

Each stainless-steel blade is plated with chrome-ceramic-tungsten and coated with a polymer to help them slide with ease of your face and retain their hardness and sharpness.

BlueBird also employs a strict quality control process so that each blade you pull out of the box looks and shaves like that last one.

This is important because when these factories are stamping out 1,000’s of blades a day, a few could easily slip through that aren’t up to their standards if they didn’t check them.

These blades don’t have many reviews but the positive ones are from guys who really seem to love these.  You will see many mentions of durability, consistency and sharpness.

There are only two complaints, one is that they are dull (of course) and the other is that blades didn’t fit the razor the guy had, which isn’t BlueBird’s fault.

So, there is not really any common issues with these blades that you can see in the reviews.

They might be worth trying out if you are looking for a new blade in your lineup.

100 7AM HI- PLATINUM Straight E100 Perma-Sharp Single Edge Razor Blades

The 7 AM Hi-Platinum’s are another quality contender. They have over 100 reviews with a 4-star rating.

These blades are platinum coated so they give you a smooth shave and have good durability. At. ~$.13 a blade these are some of the more expensive blades but you usually get what you pay for.

When we say expensive we are only talking a few pennies more so it’s not a huge difference in actual dollars.

These 7 AM’s are known for their sharpness and may offer a closer shave with possibly less passes than some of the other blades.

Based on the reviews these blades may be good for you if you have rough skin or thick beards as their durability will hold up throughout the shave.

They will also allow you to get a close shave when other blades or shavers may not have.

Most of the complaints are guys who simply did not like these blades and preferred others. Remember your mileage may vary so while these are great for most guys they do not work for everyone.

Others mistook these for the 7 O’clock blades from Gillette and were disappointed by that.

Overall these seem to please most of their users and should be a decent blade.

Feather Artist Club Professional Blade

At a little over $.50 a blade the Feather Artist club blades are the most expensive on this list but you will definitely get what you pay for with these.

Unfortunately, they don’t fit your average shavette and you will need one of the Feather straight edge razors to use these but if you don’t mind paying a little more for a quality shave these are the way to go.

Feather is a Japanese company known for making high quality blades and razors. Their blades are considered to be some of the sharpest on the market so use caution with them.

These are also some of the highest rated blades at 4.6-stars and over 150 reviews. So there seems to be quite a few guys who don’t mind paying for quality.

These blades might have the closest performance to a fixed blade straight razor that is a 4/8 or 5/8 width.

As you scroll through the reviews you will see many guys and girls loving this blade for who close and great a shave it gives. You will also see warnings about taking your time because of how sharp they are.

The complaints are not about the razor themselves, except that they are sharp and expensive.

Which if money is a factor than that is a downfall but if you need a better shave these could be worth the price.

Variety Pack

If you are confused at this point one of the best things you could do is try a variety pack. This one comes with 3 packs of 100, there are others out there that give more variety, but you would need to snap the blades yourself as they come as double edge blades.

They come with the Shark Super Stainless, Perma-Sharp and Sharp blades. Even though at least one person received the 7 AM blades instead of the Sharp.

A lot of barbers like this pack because of how many razors you get for such a low price.

This pack doesn’t have a ton of reviews but at this point in time has no 1 or 2 star ratings.

Again, this could be a great started pack to try different blades at one time, however it could be better buy offering more variety and less of each blade.

With 100 of each blade it could take you a while to get through each one unless you change the blade after each shave. And if you don’t like one kind you will be stuck with them.

However, this may be a great pack to go in on with some friends.

Conclusion

So, which disposable straight razor blade will be best for you? That is the magic question.

Like we mentioned earlier, every beard and skin type are different so you may have to try a few blades to find the perfect shave.

If you don’t suffer from skin irritation you may want to lean towards a sharper blade as they are more efficient. However, if you do, then you may want to go for a smoother blade like the Derby’s.
