Rating: 4.7/5 stars with 350 reviews

Cheapest Place to Buy: Amazon

The AS-D2 is more expensive than some of the more popular razors you see from Merkur, Parker or Mühle, but this double edge safety razor is built to last.

Each piece has been engineered with the utmost quality of stainless steel, you might even be able to pass this down to your son in the future.

Who is Feather?

Feather was founded in 1932 under the original name of Japan Safety Razor Co.

They later changed their name to Feather Safety Razor Co. which is how they are known these days.

Sometimes you will see Seki in front of their name as that is where their manufacturing plant was originally established.

Their North American distributor also sells the Feather razors under that name.

Over the years, they have introduced many different types of bladed products but they are very much known for their safety razors.

What Are The Features?

OK so the main difference of this razor and many others is that it is all stainless steel.

Stainless steel is much more corrosion resistant than the chrome plated brass you find on most models. It will not easily rust, stain or corrode.

This means it could last you a lifetime! However, you still need to keep it clean and dry.

They use surgical grade stainless steel which some say is too much but being able to own this for a lifetime is a small price to pay.

It comes with a traditional closed comb 3-piece screw off head. Customers say the head is mild on the skin.

This makes it a great first razor or for those of you with sensitive skin.

It may seem like a lot to spend so much on your first razor but it will be easier to learn the proper technique with this mild safety razor.

Also, some customer reviews even mention how it gives a smoother, closer shave than other more aggressive models. So, you get the best of both worlds!

Just because it is mild does not mean it can’t cut your beard if you have thicker hair. It is really just a holder of the blades, which do the cutting.

So, if you like a more aggressive shave you can always get sharper blades to use in the razor.

If you are looking for an even more aggressive shave you can modify this razor a bit by buying a new base plate from iKon called the B1 Open Come Deluxe Base Plate.

It is interchangeable with the Feather parts and will give you more blade exposure when shaving. However, it is not necessary to get a decent shave.

The AS D2 has a nice length of 3.5 inches as well as a heavier weight of 3.17 ounces.

It is well balanced and you will feel the sturdiness in your grip. Don’t apply any pressure when shaving because of the weight.

The handle has deep grooves which will ensure your grip.  Even your hands are covered with shaving soap.

When Should You Choose This Over an Edwin Jagger DE89 or Merkur 34C?

Obviously, you will spend less money upfront on a AS D2 vs. a DE89 or Merkur 34C but you may end up with an inferior product.

Yes, there are some customers out there who just think this razor is too mild. They prefer the cheaper models mentioned above.

However, the AS D2 will offer a safer shave and potentially last much longer than the other two razors.

There are several reviewers who mention the 34C either breaking or the chrome becoming compromised within a short period of time.

The DE89 seems to have similar issues as many mentioning the cheaper metal used allows for the handle to break within a few months as well.

Where Should You Buy2?

When shopping, online Amazon is normally the safest and cheapest place to buy. Make sure you are getting the AS-D2 model and not the older AS-D1.

Feather improved the AS-D2. The head holds the blade at a better angle.

This stainless-steel safety razor has almost 350 reviews of which 91% are at least a 4 star.

Customers really tend to love this product. The AS-D2 is made well and provides a great shave.

Conclusion

Having an all stainless-steel razor is nice. However, razors of other metals will still give quality shaves.

If you are just looking to get your first safety razor you may want to go for something less expensive. You may not be able to truly appreciate the craftsmanship in this razor.

Even though the main complaint is how mild the razor is you can easily get a close shave with a second or third pass which is common with many safety razors.
