You may have seen a lot of talk recently about Parker and Merkur razors, but now it is time to look at another high-quality brand, Mühle.
Our Mühle R89 Review finds this razor tends to be a little more expensive than other brands but with all things in life, you get what you pay for. This is our Mühle R89 review.
Mühle has as much tradition as any safety razor company being founded in 1945. They are based in Stützengrün, Saxony have been owner managed since the beginning.
Keeping traditions alive they manufacture some of their products, like their shaving brushes by hand. However, these can be pricey so to reach more people at an economical price point they also mass produce many of their products. But many of the machines they built themselves.
When you think of Mühle, think of quality.
It weighs in just a fraction under 3 ounces. This doesn’t make it the heaviest razor but it is certainly not the lightest. This is a nice moderate weight that won’t be too light or too heavy that you are prone to cutting yourself.
The main difference between this and the R89 would probably be the total length. The Grande is just a hair over 4.2 inches long which is on the longer side for a safety razor. It is also a little thicker you it will feel secure in your grip.
Some say the chrome plating is superior to other brands. They say it is the same method that Rolls Royce use to apply their chrome. It is a “blue chrome” that will certainly stand out against your other razors.
The R89 Grande as a solid brass core which will help it last for many years to come. It is very well made, we would like to say it could withstand a fall however one customer noted theirs dropped from counter height and the screw popped off.
The only other negative review is that on person’s threads on the head got stripped out after a year.
With a brand like Mühle that has an intense focus on quality, it is not wonder this razor has such great reviews.
First, this is a closed comb straight bar type razor which are naturally less aggressive than open combs or so adjustable safety razors. These are typically better for beginners as they are more forgiving as you are learning the technique of wet shaving, especially if you are used to using electric shavers.
The knurling is solid on the handle which gives you a sure grip, even if your hands are a little slippery form applying your pre-shave oil or shaving soap.
The head is also said to be less aggressive vs. other razors like the Merkur 34C. Which hopefully means less cuts for you as you learn the technique.
The only real difference between these two razors is the handle. That’s right the head is actually the exact same and is licensed to both companies.
The DE89 has a shorter handle which also make the razor lighter as well. It is only about 3.8 inches long and just over 2 oz. in weight. This might be better for those of you who want more control.
The DE89 is less expensive, which is probably why it is much more popular on Amazon. However, there are many reviewers that had a problem with screw popping off that holds the head. So, like we said earlier, you get what you pay for.
However, you may want to add a variety pack of razor blades if you are new to wet shaving. The different varieties of blades can have quite an impact on your shave, plus they are cheap so it is worth trying out a few.
So, you will end up paying a little more for the R89 Grande than some of the other popular razors on Amazon, but is the extra $30 or so worth the extra quality? Well that will be up to you to decide. Also, over the course of several years that extra money really isn’t that much.
As you can see there are many reasons to want to love this razor like the superior chrome that they use. This combined with the closed comb razor makes this a great first razor or a gift for a loved one.
