Parker’s 40 years of experience are shining bright in the 91R, their heavyweight double edge safety razor.

This razor will give a quality shave that is on par with other big brands such as Merkur, if not better!

What Are The Features Of The Parker 91R?

Parker 91r Review (1)

  • 3 ounces
  • Solid Brass frame with chrome plating
  • 3-piece design with screw off head
  • Straight bar comb

Weighing in at 3 ounces give this razor a solid feel in your hand. It is not the heaviest razor in Parker’s line up but you will enjoy this weight. When you shave with a safety razor that has a good amount of weight to it you don’t have to apply pressure to your face. In fact, you risk cutting yourself if you do. You simply need to guide the razor.

The weight comes from their quality brass frame. This is a well-made razor that will last for many, many years. Brass does not tarnish as easy as other metals as well so even if the chrome plating is compromised it should still last a while.

Straight bar combs can be less aggressive than open tooth combs, however the gap on this head makes the 91R moderately aggressive. All this means is there is more blade exposed which some guys prefer if they have a tough beard.

If you have sensitive skin, you may want to go for a less aggressive razor like the Merkur 23C.

The 3-piece design is also nice when inserting your razor blade. It takes any guess work out of making sure you have the blade perfectly straight like some of Parker’s butterfly opening models. There are 2 guide bars and then the screw in the middle that will line your blade up perfectly.

What Are The Cons Of The Parker 91R?

Most of the features can be considered pros of the Parker 91R, however to be fair, here are some of the not so great features of the razor.

There may have been some manufacturing issues a few years ago, as there are some older reviews that mention the screw that holds the head together falling off after a year or so.  However, others have said they have used it for several years so maybe the ones who broke theirs were mishandling it.

Other than that, some people preferred the convenience of the butterfly openings and not needing to unscrew the whole razor. However, you usually only need to change the blades once a week so this shouldn’t be a huge deal.

Why Is The Parker 91R A Great First Razor?

This double edge safety razor would make a great first razor for several reasons. First, it is economical. For around $30 you get the razor and 5 starter blades. When you go to get replacement blades, you can find them for about $.10 a piece vs. the $4-5 you pay for cartridge razors.

You might also find this safety razor to cause less skin irritation. Especially if you use a nice pre-shave oil underneath your shaving cream.  The reason is that the multi-blades can pull your hair and cut them below the skin surface which is a main reason of irritation.

The three-piece design makes it easier to clean than the butterfly opening models since you can take it complete apart and let it dry before you put it back together. Also, like we mentioned earlier, the blade is easier to lineup in the head.

As long as you pay attention to what you are doing and practice the recommended techniques, you shouldn’t worry too much about cutting yourself. Go slow and use short strokes in the direction your beard grows. And remember you don’t have to apply pressure since the razor has enough weight!

Where Should You Buy The Parker 91R?

We usually recommend Amazon when you are purchasing online. They are usually the cheapest and safest place to go. Plus, you can read over 150 reviews about the 91R, just be sure to look for ones that say ‘verified purchase’.

Plus, they offer free shipping on orders over $50 if you decide to add some razor blades or a shaving brush to your order.

Conclusion

Parker has many years of quality engineering experience that shows in their safety razors like the 91R. It is one of the main reasons they are gaining popularity against many other big brands.

Whether this is your first razor or your fifth, you will be sure to get many great shaves over the years with this razor.
