Merkur, the maker of the Merkur 38C Barber Pole, is a subsidiary of the company Dovo Solingen, who has been around since 1906. Talk about experience!
That’s right they have been perfecting their craft for over 100 years. They started out making scissors and shears but eventually found themselves making some of the best straight and safety razors on the market.
As you can tell from the name, they are based in Solingen Germany. They acquired Merkur in 1996 and began a great focus on shaving products in 2013.
The Merkur 38C is one of the heavier models Merkur designs. It weighs in at a hefty 4 oz. which is more than the 23C and 34C.
It also has a longer handle than the 34C at 3.75 inches. The length of the handle is mainly a personal preference. Some feel that shorter handles give you more control.
However, even with longer handles you can “choke up” (hold it closer to the comb) on you grip and get more control.
It also comes with their standard closed comb straight guard which is a great general comb that should work for most beard and skin types.
You can also get the Barber Pole in Black instead of the chrome finish.
Similarly, to cartridge razors, you will want to replace your razor blade about once a week with the Merkur Barber Pole. This will vary of course depending on the thickness of your beard and how frequently you shave.
