Trying to find a good razor blade for your safety razor can be tough with so many options.

Derby has been making quality razors for several decades now so while it remains to be seen if it works with your beard, you can be sure it is of high quality.

Keep reading our Derby Razor Blades Review to see if they could be right for you.

Who Is Derby, The Company?

The company that creates the fine Derby Extra razor blade is located in India. They have been around since the 1950’s but Amusebat (current name) was founded in 1987.

They have three manufacturing facilities totaling over 45,000 square feet! Of course, their razor production facility is just one of these but they mean serious business!

You can also see many certificates of quality on their website letting you know they are serious about their products and the customers who use them.

Derby Razor Blades Review Description

Derby Razor Blades Review 2

These smooth razor blades are made from a fine Swedish stainless steel strip that is hardened and ground by cutting-edge equipment.

They are then coated with chromium ceramic, tungsten and platinum to give them a longer life and you more shaves with each blade.

Finally, they are coated with a polymer that helps them slide across your face and reduce friction for a more comfortable shave.

The blades undergo strict quality control tests before they are released for distribution. As we mentioned earlier you can see their ISO 9000 certificates on their website.

Compared to other razor blades, Derby Extras are considered some of the smoothest, however they are definitely not the sharpest.

If you have a really thick beard these are probably not the blades for you.

However, if you have sensitive skin or an average beard and would like a comfortable shave, you should give these a try.

Just a reminder though, it is hard to recommend a blade since every guy’s skin and beard are different. So, even though you can read many awesome reviews about these blades, you won’t truly know if they are right for you until you try them.

Luckily, they are cheap!

Another factor is the razor you are using. Some guys get this blade because they have an aggressive razor and this blade offsets that.

If you have a mild razor and you choose these mild blades, well then it may not be sharp enough and you might find yourself having to do a third pass to get a close shave.

The more passes performed increases the risk of irritation.

When Should You Change Your Blade?

Most guys usually get 3-5 shaves per blade however this is just an average. Some will only get one and others ten.

This is another area that really all depends on you. How thick or coarse is your beard? How much pulling can you tolerate?

In general, if the blade starts to rust or tug on your hair you should go ahead change it. You’d rather be safe than sorry.

Another thing to think about it these safety razor blades are currently less than $.09 each! If it is worth it to you to spend $.50 a week for a new, fresh blade everyday then go for it!

Why Would You Choose A Derby VS. The Astra Or Feather?

As we mentioned earlier there are a few common reasons why you might choose a Derby Extra blade for yourself:

  • Sensitive skin
  • Aggressive razor
  • Light beard
  • Looking for an overall comfortable shave
  • Not concerned with getting the closest shave

As mentioned by many this is not the sharpest razor but usually one of the smoothest giving you a comfortable shave.

Astra and Feather blades are considered to be some of the sharpest and some reasons why you might want to go with those include:

  • Thick beard
  • Mild razor
  • Want a super close shave
  • Sensitive skin
  • Can tolerate an aggressive razor

If you don’t suffer from skin irritation issues you may like these because depending on your beard you may be able to get away with only one or two passes.

With the Derby’s, you will probably need a third and possibly even a spot check after that to clean up any missed areas.

The sharper blades should give a closer shave with less passes, which could also help reduce irritation.

Where Should You Buy The Derby Extra Blade?

If you are shopping online Amazon is a trustworthy place to shop. They also generally have the best pricing and can offer free shipping on lower total sales orders.

You can also currently read over 1,200 reviews about this blade with an average rating of 4.4-stars.

Just make sure you look for the ones that say ‘verified purchase’.  Also, when you read the negative reviews remember, YMMV.

Some guys just won’t be able to get the blade to work for them.

Derby Razor Blades Review Conclusion

We have given you plenty of reasons why you might or might not want to purchase this blade.

Worst case scenario, if you don’t like it, you are only out about $10 because they are pretty cheap.

If you are unsure, you may want to consider buying one of the many great variety packs that can come with 10 or 12 different types of blades so you can try a bunch out with one purchase.

Nice unbiased review. I will definitely like to try this out as my other half has sensitive skin and always complain about how he always accidentally cut himself while shaving because of the sharpness of the blade. I think this might be worth a good try as its also affordable. Thank you.

    Hi Jeremy,

To be honest, I haven’t shaved ( with a razor ) for about 4 years now. The reason is that every single time I use a razor my face is very very smooth and silky for about 5-6 hours and then disaster strikes :). My skin gets all red and in a few hours I get all the pimples in the world :). It’s like a rash. So I decided to trim my beard with a clipper, never use razors again. I guess my face is to sensitive not to razors but to my hair growing back, that’s why I guess it takes a few hours to become like that.

Great article by the way ! Thanks !

You are correct, if you shave the hair too close it can cause razor bumps when it grows back into your skin. What kind of razor did you use? Some guys who were using a multi-blade cartridge razor switched to a DE safety razor and found relief.
