It is definitely a step up from their 5500 series shaver.
Unlike that shaver, it is fitted with comfort rings. Which claim to be a unique microbead coating. This is supposed to help reduce friction and therefore reducing irritation if you have sensitive skin.
This should also help the razor float across the contours of your face, unlike foil shavers that are better for angular faces and straight-line strokes.
Like the 5500 series it has the same DynamicFlex technology. This is great for getting a close shave around every curve of your chin and jawline. This allows the rotary heads to rotate in 5 different directions!
Rotary electric shavers tend to perform better around the contours of your face. This technology is also said to help reduce pinching or catching of hair that can sometimes happen with these electric shavers.
This model has a less aggressive lift and cut action on the blades. Philips calls these Gentle precision blades that are supposed to give you a more comfortable shave by again, reducing any pinching or pulling of your hair.
However, the newer blades operate at a higher CPM. This allows them to cut your hair more efficiently which will cause less irritation. As your blades get older and you replace them it should bring back the efficiency to 100%, like a brand new razor!
If you are used to rotary shavers or have an older model, don’t be afraid to trade up for a newer shaver like this one. You will appreciate the difference.
This is a great feature if you have sensitive skin. The slightest pull can cause redness or irritation.
The LED display is little nicer on this more expensive model however it shows the same features:
Again, the LED is functional but doesn’t have a complete digital display like some other higher end electric shavers.
It also has the same AquaTec technology that allows you to shower wet or dry. Those of you with sensitive skin will love this feature as the added moisture of the shower or your favorite shaving cream will keep your skin feeling fresh.
An added bonus to taking a step up from the less expensive models is the SmartClean System. This system acts as a charger as well as a cleaning system.
This cleaning system is similar to the Braun Series 7 base in that it cleans and lubricates while your razor charges. However, this system uses an alcohol free solution which should give you less irritation on your skin.
Some customer reviews on Amazon have suggested to still rinse your head under water before inserting into the cleaning base to remove any stubble since the base will not do that on its own. Some have also said you might want to rinse after cleaning as the lubricant can leave a little residue on your face.
The travel case is very nice on this model. It even has vents so you can stick your wet razor straight in the case if you are in a hurry and will continue to dry! This is a nice feature.
Like all Philips models it has the clip on trimmer which we are not huge fans of. One it could be annoying every time you want to use that to have to detach the rotary head and attach the trimmer. The other thing is it could be easy to lose while you are traveling if you forget to put the trimmer back in your case.
However, this is just one small con in an otherwise great electric razor.
Philips uses a slightly better battery in this model then some of its lower models. You get an extra 5 minutes of shave time with a full charge. That is 50 minutes vs. 45 minutes with a full hour of charging.
This isn’t a huge deal because 5 minutes is pretty nominal, nonetheless it is an upgrade!
Plus you really only need a good 5 minutes of charging time for one shave if you haven’t charged in a few days. Battery life shouldn’t really be an issue with most electric shavers these days.

Electric shavers in general will not get as close as a blade like a safety razor, but they ca certainly give you the look of a close shave with a lot more convenience. Wet shaving is a definitely and involved process.
However we feel, like this is a great value for the price. Being just under $200, yet you still get many great features vs. some other razors that are well over $300.
