Description of Norelco 5500 Review

2017 Norelco 5500 Review Update: The Norelco 5500 remain steady priced just under $100 but continues to be a popular seller on Amazon. Depending the contours of your face, you may prefer a rotary shaver compared to a foil shaver.

Here is another great, economical rotary electric shaver. It might not hold up to some other electric razors under $100 but this will still give you a quality, smooth shave.

There are many features to get excited about with this Philips Norelco shaver.

It’s most unique feature is the “turbo mode” Philips claims on their website that it gives the shaver 10% more power. This is great if you are in a hurry or you have thicker hair, the turbo boost will help you power right through it!

You may end up leaving this razor in turbo mode for your entire shave. Depending on the thickeness of your beard you may be able to get a smooth shave in as little as 90 seconds.

However if you have sensitive skin you may want to leave this feature off.

Like the name implies this shaver is meant to be used as a wet or dry shave system. So if you prefer to get a more comfortable shave in the shower, you absolutely can! You can also use a pre-shave oil or shaving cream as well.

Their long lasting lithium-ion battery only takes one hour to charge and gives you 45 minutes of shaving time. This is just a few minutes less than some more expensive shavers but for almost 1/3 the price who cares about 5 minutes!

The charger also automatically detects voltage which is helpful when you have to travel and not sure where you are going to get to plug in for the day!

Each rotary has a multi-precision blade system. They claim that this helps raise hairs as you are shaving for a more complete shave and not leaving much stubble behind. It also is supposed to reduce the number of strokes needed to complete the shave.

This is part of the newer SH50/52 replacement heads that Philips is now using. Compared to the older blades, these can cut much closer and won’t pull your hairs as much.

This will help you maximize your batter life since the less time it takes you to shave the less often you have to charge!

This electric razor also comes with a smartclick precision trimmer. To be honest, we are not fans that this is a separate item. Most razors out there today come standard with this already built into the razor. It seems like an inconvenience to have to attach this every time you want to use it.

However, one reviewer on Amazon claims to prefer this rotary shave to our top ranked electric shaver under $100.

This Norelco rotary electric razor also comes with a super lift & cut action feature like most other razors. This helps lift hairs with the first blade leaving the second blade to cut the hair.

Features like these help reduce the number of strokes during your shave. When shopping around make sure you look for something like this.

One great thing about rotary shaves is that they tend to do better with the contours of your face. The head on the Philips Norelco Electric Shaver 5500 Wet & Dry, S5370/86 happens to move in 5 different directions allowing you to get as close as possible.  I’m not sure if it is possible to rotate in any more directions but 5 sure sounds like plenty!

Remember, electric shavers can give you a close shave that looks like you used a safety razor but it won’t feel as close. This is because of the cover that goes over the blades on the electric shavers which have to be there for your protection. So, don’t have too high expectations on the closeness, try to think about the convenience.

This shaver has a very limited LCD display. However, for being limited, it still gives you a bunch of information.

  • It has 3 bars for the battery life.
  • Cleaning indicator
  • Battery Low Indicator
  • Replacement Head Indicator
  • Travel Lock Indicator

This is one of those bells & whistles that you are not paying for like on other, more expensive shavers.

Conclusion For Norelco 5500 Review

Overall this is a great electric razor for under $100. There are other shavers out there that might have more features but this one can hold its own as well.

This is a solid razor that will not have any fancy bells and whistles, will come is basic packaging but will also do it’s job well.  Whether this is for yourself or a gift, you will get what you pay for with this shaver.

If you prefer rotary shavers than might be a great option for you. Like I mentioned earlier you are not paying for a lot of extras, and this might not be as powerful as some of the higher end models but you can still get a quality shaver that will last you a long time.
