Description Braun 3040S Review
The Braun Series 3 3040S is actually the newer model of the 340S-4. For pretty much the same price you can get this updated model.
It retains all of the features that you will enjoy. Features like:
- Triple action cutting system – each blade on the has its own suspension which allows them to swivel around your face. If you have a strong jawline you will love this as the system allows this shaver to work almost as well as a rotary shaver.
- Microcomb technology – this little bad boy helps lift your hair that just want to lie flat on your skin. They say this will give you performance on a 3-day beard but most likely you will want to use the trimmer to shave down first before. This always makes for a better shave.
- Wet & Dry – not only can you take this shaver in the shower with you it also means you can wash this in your sink keeping your razor in top condition.
- Ergonomic grip – many of the reviews that compare this to its older version, the 340S-4, say that it has a much lighter feel and provides a better shaver. Some may say that it feels cheap because it is lighter but we think Braun is just being more efficient with its production.
The one thing it is missing that the older version had was a standing charge station. Which is not a huge deal, especially if you don’t have much room on top of your vanity, you wouldn’t need this anyway.
This razor is nothing fancy, it doesn’t have many moving parts that can break, it doesn’t have a fancy LCD display to give you all kinds of warnings and it doesn’t come with its own cleaning station. However, if you are just looking for a solid shaver at a very affordable price this is the shaver for you.
It works well on tough beards and gets just as close as many of the more expensive electric shavers. Many of the customers who purchased this razor talk about how close a shave they get. Without even having to go over the same spots over and over again.
If you like using electric shavers you will appreciate the quality in this one, especially for the price.
Of course, it isn’t perfect. Out of the 800+ reviews 27% were a 3 star or below. Many common complaints are those with defective products. However Braun offers a 2-year warranty. You just have to ship it to a service center.
Or it seems like some others were trying to use it on a 3-5-day beard and complaining it took to many passes to shave. This is why Braun specifically recommends shaving down with the trimmer first.
Some even tried to compare to the Series 7, but there is a $200 difference there! Of course, that won’t be a fair comparison.
Anyway, check them out for yourself.
When I use an electric shaver the hairs are not cut but pulled out! What razor would you suggest?
I have a beard, and would like to know what would be the best trimmer for a low price?
I am using a re-chargeable remington Model # PG-6015.
It is easy to use but does not hold a charge very long. Do you think this is a good product?
Hey Russell,
That is a common complaint of the Remington you are using, that it won’t hod a charge for very long. Plus it is more of a beard trimmer than a shaver. This 3040S has a pop up trimmer on the back that you can use to shave down your beard and then go over it with the shaver to get a nice smooth shaver.
It is around $50 right now which is probably about 3 times what you a paid for your current trimmer, but you get what you pay for!
Hope that helps!
I have been in desperate need of a good shaver that I can take in the shower with me, as I like to multitask lol! It looks as this one from Braun will fit the bill.
My only concern is razor bumps. Would you happen to know if this particular razor would be good for those with sensitive skin?
Hi Christian, it should be fine with your sensitive skin. Most people get razor bumps when the hair is cut too short, like with a cartridge razor.
Since electric shavers have a thin foil over their blades they cannot get this close. Let me know if you do make a purchase and how you like it.
My face for, for some reason, just never agreed with Razors and for a while I eventually started using a hair cutting machine just to keep my chin pimple-free.
Thankfully I’ve discovered electric razors and I am currently in the market for one that would be best suited for a lifestyle that involves a lot of traveling.
What would you suggest?
Hey Ryan, yes electric shavers are great if you have sensitive skin since they don’t cut the hair beneath the skin level which is the main cause of irritation.
I wrote another post on my top recommendations for sensitive skin if you have time to check it out.
Most shavers these days have excellent batteries that will give you about 50 minutes of shave time before you need a charge. They also usually come with universal charging cords that can adapt to different power outlets.
Despite my picture and that I don’t shave my face anymore, I do shave my neckline and this looks like a shaver that i’d like to use for a nice smooth trim on my neck.
Ironic that I ran across this as I have been looking for a good cheap shaver, but everything I find in stores like CVS and Walmart are just overpriced for the shave quality they provide. $200.00 for a basic shaver with no warranty is just ridiculous, wouldn’t you say?
Thank you for writing this review, this will now be one of my options as I look today!
– Chris
Yes Chris I agree! That is what is great about shopping online you get to look at many different products with all of the details. Plus the competition brings the price down for these electric shavers.
Let me know if you decide to get one and how you like!
Hey Jeremy,
Liked how your page was laid out, fresh and crisp. Easy to read. I don’t know much about men’s shavers, that last time I bought one for my husband was over 40 years ago and he didn’t like it.
My father was a barber so he ALWAYS used a straight edge, even made me help him with shaving after he went blind–that always made me a nervous wreck.
Since then I have been single (no it wasn’t the shaver’s fault) and so haven’t even thought about them.
You do give a compelling argument in favor of the Braun line. To me, it only makes sense to use a trimmer before expecting this to work.
Thank you for sharing your insights.
Hey Barbara,
Electric shavers have come along way in 40 years! I bet your husband might think differently if he had a newer model like this Braun 3040S.
However, there are some that just love shaving with a straight or safety razor. That style is also making a comeback since it is much cheaper than buying disposable cartridge razors.
This electric shaver looks promising. I’ve been looking for an inexpensive one to get some cleaner shaves. I had a bad experience with my last one. I used to break out on my skin after using it, like red bumps. Is there a lotion you recommend with this? Or, do I have to shave with a regular razor before using it? I’m not sure, I want one so bad, but I don’t want to break out anymore.
Hi Jonathan, that sounds like a rough experience with your last razor. It could have been several different reasons causing the irritation. I wrote another post about that here as well as recommended some different shaving soaps here.
Shaving with a cartridge razor first may make the issue worse. If you keep your shaver clean and the blades fresh it shouldn’t cause too much irritation since they don’t get as close as a safety razor.
I decided to read this page because this item is something I have not bought for a long time. As in decades…
This would be for a gift. The price is good, and so is the Braun name. I have a Braun coffee grinder that is 30 years old!
I appreciate the clarity of your review and I’m sure it will help those looking for a well priced quality item.
Thanks for the comment. You are right if you go with a Braun or other well known brand, these electric shavers easily last for 10 years.
Hi Jeremy,
My husband always seems to have a problem with shaving products because of his tough beard. He never seemed happy with any of the new products since he’s used the older models using regular blades. I’m wondering if this product would work?
I don’t know much about razors but if the Braun Series 3 3040S has a lot of good reviews, maybe this would be an item that would actually work on his beard. I would definitely let him know.
Thank you for sharing.
Hey Rosa,
If your husband has a tough beard you may actually want to go for one of the higher end models that has more power and even more blades possibly.
You check out my recommendations here.
Hi Jeremy,
I have been looking at buying a new shaver for a few days now. I have just been looking online at different products trying to figure out what I want to buy. After stumbling upon your site, I ran into this article.
After reading your review of the Braun Series 3 3040S, reading what others commented here, and comparing it to other products on amazon I think I am going to buy this and see how it works.
Thanks for writing this article Jeremy, it’s really helped me with my decision!
You’re welcome Hunter, let me know when you get it and how you like it!
