Looking for an aggressive double edge safety razor to add to your lineup? Well the Mühle R101 has the exact same head as the R41 which is one of Muhle’s most aggressive models.
If you are new to wet shaving you will probably want to go with a less aggressive Merkur or Parker safety razor.
With time, as your technique becomes more sound, you will be able to advance to a more aggressive razor like this one.
What Are The Pros & Cons Of The Open Comb Mühle R101?
The open comb head is the main feature that gives the R101 its aggressiveness.
Since there is less metal between the teeth and your skin more of the blade is exposed.
Experienced wet shavers appreciate this as they can get a close shave in just two passes.
If you don’t need to have a super close shave you can probably just get away with one pass with the grain of your beard.
This is great if you have a thick beard as it allows the teeth direct more hair with each pass to be cut by the blade.
However, the downside to this level of aggressiveness is like we said, it won’t be great for beginners or if you have sensitive skin.
Although it should be noted that some shavers with sensitive skin prefer the open comb as it does not bounce around so much on the skin and is said to slide easier.
Just like the R106 and R107, the R101 weighs in at 2.25 ounces and has a length just over 3.7 inches.
The handle could have a little more weight to it, bringing it a little closer to 3 ounces would probably be preferred by many.
The head is a 3-piece screw off that allows for effortless blade changing since they will line up perfectly on the guide bars.
The chrome plated head and accents are of the highest quality. They should keep their sheen for years to come if you clean it regularly.
Why Do You Need Experience To Use This Razor?
The open tooth comb provides a high level of assertiveness when shaving.
Even with milder heads there is a little bit of a learning curve. If you are switching from disposable cartridge razors or electric shavers.
One thing you could try is to use a mild blade instead of a sharp feather razor blade. This could help you adjust to the level of aggressiveness.
However, you should not be afraid to use this razor. There are more aggressive models out there and people are using them all over the world.
If you need more advice there are plenty of forums online, you can read for advice.
Who Is The Mühle R101 Good For?
This would be a good addition to your collection of safety razors if you have been shaving for a little while and have solid skills.
Especially if you have a thick beard or if you like to shave every other day this would be a great razor to get through your thicker stubble.
When Should You Switch The Handle?
This also has the same high-grade black resin handle as the R106.
Which many find this sufficient to grip even while shaving and wet.
However, some prefer a more textured grip and replace the handle with a Weber.
The R101 is usually the same price as the R41 anyway which has a chrome textured grip. So, if you think you might replace the handle you could always just grab that one instead.
Where Should You Buy The Mühle R101?
If you are shopping on line, there are dozens of stores to purchase from. But Amazon usually has the best prices or if they don’t they offer free shipping which usually makes up for it.
You can also ready many customer reviews. The R101 doesn’t have as many as some of the other models but this is because most people starting out probably don’t go for an open tooth comb.
