Finding the right blade and safety razor combo for your beard can take some trial and error.
Luckily, double edge safety razor blades are not that expensive. Often less than $.10 each, so if you don’t end up liking a certain brand you shouldn’t be out too much money.
In this review, we are going to talk about the popular Personna Lab Blue blades that are 25% sharper than previous version. But still not considered one of the sharpest razors on the market.
Who Makes Personna Double Edge Razor Blades?
The company behind the Personna double edge razor blades is actually quite rich with history.
It was founded in 1875 by the Kampfe brothers as American Safety Razor, developing one of the first safety razors.
They wanted a better way to shave vs. with a traditional straight razor which could be demanding to maintain.
As time went on they continued to revolutionize wet shaving in America with stainless steel razor blades, the first guarded blades and female disposable razors.
Description
The Lab Blue double edge razor blade is made in the US and are very well loved by their users.
With almost 4,000 reviews they boast a high 4.3-star rating which is rare with so many reviews.
They come individually wrapped in a conveniently packaged box that allows you to easily remove one razor at a time.
The stainless-steel blades are glide coated which allow them to slide easier across your face for a smoother shave.
Most guys consider this razor to sharp enough and get about 3 shaves with each blade. However, if you have a thick or coarse beard, you may want to go for a sharper blade or change these more frequently.
There are a few men who mention the smoothness of this blade but not as many as the Derby reviews.
When you read about different razor blades it can be confusing. Every guy is different and will have different opinions but they also have a different beard than you.
So how can you rely on them?
Well you should notice some common trends or try to find reviews with guys who seem like they have similar beards as you.
Another good thing to look for are comparison with other blades.
These lab blues are often described as just the right mix of sharpness and smoothness. So you get a comfortable shave that is also close.
Because they are not super sharp these could be great blades to start with if you are new to wet shaving. They won’t be as forgiving as the Derby Extra’s but may give you a closer shave.
Some of the complaints mention not receiving the Lab Blues so you may want to make sure you confirm this with the seller.
Other than that, its guys who thought the razor was going to be sharper and didn’t work well for their bear.
Which doesn’t mean it’s a bad blade, it just didn’t work out for them.
When Should Your Replace Your Blades?
The answer to this question really depends on you and your personal preferences.
In general, you should replace the blade in your double edge safety razor if it begins to pull or drag your hairs. Especially if it begins to cause irritation.
When this happens is different for every man, some have denser beards than others which may dull the razor faster.
Or if you have a really light beard, some guys get up to 10 shaves with a single blade and are really saving some money.
On average though, most guys get 3-5 shaves per blade or about a week’s worth.
Where Should You Buy?
These Personna blades can be purchase for a little over $12 on Amazon. Which is a great place to shop.
You can get free shipping on orders over $35 or if you have a Prime membership.
You also get to read as many of the almost 4,000 reviews as you care to, to see many different opinions about the blade.
One item we recommend grabbing with your blades is a disposal case so you don’t have to worry about anyone else in the house getting cut when handling the trash.

Conclusion
If you have an average beard and no sensitive skin issues the Personna razor blades could be the blade for you. With its middle of the pack sharpness yet smooth shave.
However, YMMV, as every man’s beard and skin are different as well as the razor they are shaving with.
Just be sure to do your homework or pick out a nice variety pack if you are just starting to wet shave so you can try multiple blades for not a ton of money.
The Personna blades sound like a good value. I enjoyed your review. I like the comment about the blade being “not too sharp”
I’ve had some blades that are way too sharp, so if the Personna doesn’t cut me the first couple times I use it, that would be a good thing. Thanks for the info.
You’re welcome Scott, these blades are still sharp enough to cut you so please still use care when shaving. However, they should be smooth enough to give you a comfortable shave.
Wow, i did not see a “standard” razor for years.. actually sice my granpa was alive 🙂 i am aware of clean shave they offer, and speed of shaving is unprecedented , but they also “like” to cut the skin easily… long time ago i opted out for “safety” razors, and after that to electric ones… even though electric ones do not offer the clean shave like these ones i found them more safe. What do you prefer? Electric or standard razors?
Hey Bob,
I use an electric razor on a daily basis but for holiday’s or special events I like to break out my safety razors.
As long as you take your time with them the nicks or cuts don’t happen that often.

Always glad to find places to buy double edge blades at a reasonable price. I had not heard of this particular blade, but the price is very good so I will give it a try. Some of the name brands are much more expensive. Does the coatings on the blades help extend their life? Thanks for the great reviews. I have this site bookmarked for future reference.
Hey Chas,
The coating is more for slickness so the blades slide easier over your skin and reduce friction which also helps reduce irritation.
