Summary

The Classic Samurai stainless steel straight razor is an affordable option for a decent shave. In this review we find it could be a great option for beginners.

Product: Classic Samurai Straight Razor

Rating: 4.2/5 stars with over 150 reviews

Cheapest Place to Buy: Amazon

Classic Samurai produces another decent shavette. It allows you get a quality straight razor barber style shave without all of the maintenance of a fixed straight edge razor.

Today we review their classic model and find it is affordable. The kit comes with 100 Derby Professional blades which should give you at least a year’s worth of shaves. Making this one of the most economical choices out there.

Who is Classic Samurai?

Classic Samurai is a company that creates fine shaving products with Japanese quality.

They have everything from brushes to soaps to many different blades to help you get a quality shave.

They also offer many gift sets on their website.

What Is The Classic Samurai Straight Razor All About?

Classic Samurai Straight Razor Review (1)

The Classic Samurai straight razor is made with surgical grade stainless steel and has a smooth black handle.

This should help prevent it from rusting and offer a comfortable grip.

It has the flipable blade lock like other shavettes that allows for quick and easy blade changes. It works with single edge razor blades which you can easily snap your favorite double edge blade in half to create one.

The Derby blades that come with it are some of the smoother blades on the market. They are not as sharp which might make this a good choice for a beginner.

If you are new to this style of shaving you will need to take your time in learning the technique. So give yourself a few extra minutes in the morning.

Also, you should probably shave in front of a mirror since you will need to take slow, short strokes and get used to the angle.

Classic Samurai Straight Razor Review 3 (1)Customers mention this is a great starter straight razor. Some have even gone on to purchase fixed straight razors after getting comfortable with the technique.

Most of the negative reviews are some customers who didn’t find the blades to be sharp enough or felt this was a cheap product.

Make sure you have the right expectations, this is about a $10 product so if quality is what you are looking for you will need to look elsewhere.

However, it will do its job and hold the razor blade to allow a decent shave.

Razor blades are cheap and they will work differently for every man so you may need to try a few different kinds before you find some that you really like.

Variety packs on Amazon are a great way to try a few different kinds for not a lot of money.

Classic Samurai Straight Razor Instructions

When shaving with a straight razor like the Classic Samurai, you will need to prepare your face well for the shave.

Many recommend either taking a hot shower or washing your face with warm water. This helps remove the natural oils off your face allowing your beard hairs to absorb more water and soften.

You should also use a pre-shave oil underneath your favorite shaving cream. This will help lubricate your skin so the blade slides easier and reduces irritation.

These types of razors are definitely riskier than an electric shaver but if you have patience you will be able to master the technique.

You will want to pull you skin tight, especially in problem areas like under your nose or on your chin. This will help reduce nicks.

Using a 30-degree angle, take slow, strokes with the grain. Going against the grain can cause razor burn.

Why Choose The Classic Samurai Straight Razor Over Equinox Or Parker SR1?

The three of these shavettes are very similar. Like the Classic Samurai, the Equinox straight razor comes with the same pack of blades for about the same price.

The handle is also made of stainless steel so if that is one difference you may prefer.

The Parker SR1 is a little more expensive and doesn’t come with as many blades, however, despite also having a plastic handle it may be of a slightly higher build quality.

Either way, any of these three straight razors would make a fine first time blade if you are thinking about giving wet shaving a try.

Where Should You Buy the Classic Samurai Straight Razor?

We normally recommend Amazon when shopping online as they are usually the cheapest and safest place to shop.

Plus, since so many people shop there you can read hundreds and sometimes thousands of reviews on about the product you are looking at.

Of course, every man is different so you won’t really know how something will work for you until you try but it always nice to see what others have to say.

Classic Samurai Straight Razor Conclusion

The Classic Samurai stainless steel straight razor will not be the highest quality razor you can buy but it will give you almost 200 shaves with the blades it comes with.

If you are looking to try out a new style of shaving without investing a lot of money this would be a good choice.

This would also make a great gift for someone who has mentioned interest in wet shaving.

    HI Buddy,

I am really intrigued by what we call “cut throat” razors and really fancy trying one out for a seriously close shave. How easy are those things to use? are they dangerous? can I get a serious cut from them? finally is the learning process fairly straight forward?

I am guessing that with a top quality “cut throat” razor and blade I am going to get a far better and closer shave than with aa gillette power glide.

      Hi Derek,

Yes they can be dangerous but since you are already going into with that mind set I imagine you will be careful with it.

Some guys actually practice shaving on a balloon to get the feel for the angle. Once you can do that without popping it you should be ready to give it a try!

I’m going to buy this just because of the name. I love the name and I can tell just by looking the second image of the blade that this thing is extremely sharp. Great review I can now finally get rid of my traditional shaving razor. Do you have any recommendations on shave creams? Like any specific one to use for sensitive skin?

Hi James, Yes absolutely, the Soap Commander Integrity variety is unscented and shouldn’t bother your skin too much.

You can find more info about here as well as some other recommendations.

While I don’t utilize a straight razor, I would imagine if you do you would want a quality one like this one. I think one thing this product has that many don’t is that it is made with surgical grade stainless steal like you mentioned and that this aspect of the razor will help prevent rusting. If I ever switch to a straight razor, I will definitely consider a product such as this one. Thanks for reviewing the product!

I must say that, that is a cool looking razor! unfortunately I do not know how to shave with straight razors but I’ve always wanted to learn! I know these ways of shaving are the traditional and still the best so maybe you could include an article to teach the fine art to beginners like me!
